SUMMARY:Soutenance de thèse par Nathan BUJAULT (Institut Néel)
\nAbstract : \nFrustrated magnetism is a field of condensed matter physics that studies systems in which the interactions between\nmagnetic moments cannot be satisfied simultaneously\, due to the geometry of the crystal lattice or the very nature of the interactions\, thereby generating a plethora of new exotic states. Among these\, spin ice is a correlated and degenerate state\, lacking long-range order\, which is governed by a local constraint (the ice rule) arising from effective ferromagnetic interactions. In rare-earth oxides with formula R2M2O7 (R = rare earth\, M = metal)\, the rare earth lies on a pyrochlore lattice—the archetype of a three-dimensional frustrated lattice—and the spin ice state is stabilized when R = Ho\, Dy\, and M is nonmagnetic. The objective of this thesis is to understand how this ground state evolves under the influence of perturbations\, using two complementary strategies: (i) The introduction of structural disorder through the partial substitution of Ti atoms with Hf atoms in Ho2Ti2O7. Since Hf atoms are larger\, this substitution introduces a local distortion of the crystal lattice\, which promotes the emergence of quantum fluctuations in the form of transverse fields. These fluctuations can induce a tunneling effect between the various degenerate configurations of the ground state and stabilize a new quantum spin ice phase in which new excitations are expected. Through a detailed study of powder samples with various substitution rates\, we investigate how the spin ice state and its properties evolve with disorder. We demonstrate the development of quantum fluctuations induced by substitution by observing a global acceleration of the dynamics as well as the presence of new low energy excitations. The implications of these observations for the nature of the stabilized phases are discussed. (ii) The introduction of a magnetic metal on the M site\, which generates a magnetic interaction between the rare earth and the metal and deeply alters the ground state. When M = Ir\, previous studies have shown the stabilization of a fragmented state in which the magnetization consists of an ordered antiferromagnetic component and a disordered component governed by local constraints. Here\, we focus on the case of Ru to test the hypothesis of a fragmented state\, this time of the ferromagnetic type\, in the compound Ho2Ru2O7. To this end\, we study the Y2Ru2O7 and Dy2Ru2O7 compounds. In Y2Ru2O7\, the temperature dependence of the magnetic structure of ruthenium and the associated spin waves are measured with the aim of establishing the Hamiltonian for ruthenium interactions. In Dy2Ru2O7\, we show that although the ordered moment differs from that observed in Ho2Ru2O7\, the measured dynamics exhibit similar characteristics. These observations raise questions about the interaction mechanisms between the rare earth element and the metal\, which we address by probing the temperature dependence of the energy structure of the crystal field levels. This research is based primarily on measurements of magnetization and alternative susceptibility at very low temperatures (70 mK) performed using magnetometers developed in the laboratory\, combined with a wide range of neutron scattering measurements (diffraction\, polarized neutrons\, inelastic scattering\, and spin echo). \n_ \nContact : nathan.bujault@neel.cnrs.fr
