SUMMARY:Thomas JULOU (Biozentrum\, Basel\, Switzerland)
DESCRIPTION:On survival and gene expression during E. coli starvation\nRésumé : \nIt is widely believed that bacteria spend most of their life in a non-growing state. However\, despite major clinical and ecological implications\, very little is known about what controls survival and what determines bacterial phenotypes when nutrients are depleted. In this talk\, I will report on several aspects of bacterial starvation. First\, we showed that\, like the growth rate\, the mortality rate during carbon starvation depends critically on subtle differences in environmental conditions. Second\, we found that phenotypes are shaped early on upon entry into starvation and last during several days. For this\, using a newly designed microfluidic device in combination with fluorescence time-lapse microscopy and automated image analysis\, we measured gene expression during starvation by quantifying volumic production of proteins across time in single cells. By combining the observed time-dependent protein production and independently measured degradation rates\, we show how protein concentrations deep into stationary phase are determined mainly by the expression dynamics in the first 10 hours of starvation. Finally\, using perturbation experiments in which gene expression is inhibited for different periods\, we also established that both survival and tolerance to stress during starvation depend strongly on this early expression program. Taken together\, these results provide a first quantitative picture of cell maintenance\, and provide a starting point for studying the emergence of specific phenotypes when nutrients become scarce. \n_ \nContact : natale.scaramozzino@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

DESCRIPTION:Versatility of Melanoma antigens in regulating human ubiquitin signalling\nRésumé : \nHumans carry around 40 different genes coding for melanoma antigen (MAGE) proteins. Most MAGE proteins are selectively expressed in the testis and cancer\, categorizing them as cancer-testis antigens (CTAs). These CTA MAGEs are potently oncogenic and known to be poor prognostic markers. Additionally\, around 11 MAGE proteins are expressed in various tissues\, with a particular enrichment in the brain. MAGEs interact with multiple ubiquitin ligases to influence their activity or redirect them to specific substrates in a context-dependent manner. We use integrative structural biology techniques combined with proteomics and light microscopy to answer fundamental questions in MAGE biology. In this talk\, I will present two examples of MAGE-driven signaling—one involving an oncogenic MAGE and another involving a neuronal-specific MAGE protein. I will also present our efforts to develop novel\, proteomics-based methods to study ubiquitin signaling at scale. DESCRIPTION:Coherent interaction between individual electron spins and superconducting circuits and dispersive spin detection\nRésumé : \nSpin defects in solids can be engineered as well-isolated two-level-systems with coherence that can exceed seconds\, but couple weakly to other quantum systems and to electromagnetic fields. In the lab\, exploring quantum optical effects in the microwave regime with spin defects requires an enhancement of the light-matter interaction; this may be achieved by coupling the spin to a low-impedance superconducting resonator. I will present two recent results involving resonator design and exploration of magnetic noise-insensitive spin defects. The first is a demonstration of the dispersive shift in frequency of a superconducting resonator conditioned on the state of a single electron spin. The second is a coherent interaction between a single magnetic-noise-insensitive electron spin transition and the field of a resonator in the so-called high cooperativity regime. \n_ \nContact : equipe-seminaires-nano@listes.grenoble.cnrs.fr

DESCRIPTION:Cavity-controlled superconductivity : interplay of matter and photonic fluctuations\nRésumé : \nConfining electromagnetic fields in a cavity reshapes the photonic environment of a superconductor\, providing a tunable control of its superfluid stiffness. We show that the sign of this effect depends qualitatively on the underlying superconducting regime. In conventional low-temperature BCS superconductors\, cavity-photon-mediated electron-electron interactions renormalize the kinetic mass of Cooper pairs\, leading to a reduction of effective superfluid density near critical temperature. In contrast\, in phase-fluctuating two-dimensional superconductors (such as underdoped cuprates)\, the cavity reshapes the collective plasma mode and can thereby suppress thermally excited phase fluctuations\, effectively enhancing the superfluid stiffness. These theoretical findings provide a possible explanation for recent experimental observations in niobium- and cuprate-based systems. \n_ \nContact : pierre.nataf@lpmmc.cnrs.fr

SUMMARY:Soutenance de thèse par Tanisha BADHAURIA
DESCRIPTION:Étude des effets électromécaniques dans des nanofils semi-conducteurs piézoélectriques\nRésumé : \nZinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire (NWs) are promising materials for nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) and piezoelectric energy harvesting due to their coupled piezoelectric\, semiconducting nature and compatibility with low temperature synthesis methods. Theoretically\, ultra-thin ZnO NWs are expected to show a substantial increase in the piezoelectric response\, but their experimental fabrication and integration into functional devices still present difficulties. This thesis explores the effects of NW geometry\, d efect chemistry and device architecture on the electromechanical response of hydrothermally grown ZnO NWs. Two device architectures are developed for advanced nanoscale characterization\, including individual laterally contacted NW devices and vertically integrated Piezoelectric energy generators (PEGs). We report the first successful integration of electrically functional devices \nand (PEGs) with vertically aligned ultra-thin ZnO NWs of diameter about 20 nm for the experimental study of their piezoelectric behaviour. The systematic post-growth treatments like oxygen annealing\, vacuum annealing and oxygen plasma exposure are investigated by XRD\, FESEM\, PL\, XPS\, KPFM\, s-MIM and PFM. An oxygen annealing at 500° C showed that the free-carrier screening is reduced and increases the effective piezoelectric coefficient from 5.3 pm/V to 6.2 pm/V\, a 17% enhancement\, while \, preserving the NW morphology. Combining the size reduction of ZnO NWs to ultra-thin with oxygen annealing result in a synergistic enhancement of the piezoelectric performance. The oxygen annealed PEGs fabricated from 20-nm-diameter and 1-μm-long ZnO NWs showed a maximum output voltage of 134 mV under the applied force of at 1N\, which is an enhancement of about 306% compared to the devices based on the thicker (~80 nm) NWs which was 33mV. The results directly link the dimensions\, defect chemistry\, and electromechanical response\, showing that combining diameter engineering and defect engineering is an effective strategy for optimizing ZnO-basedpiezoelectric devices for future self-powered sensors and energy harvesting applications. \n_ \nContact : deborah.verger@grenoble-inp.fr

DESCRIPTION:Dynamic Supramolecular Eutectogels with Reversible Light Driven Reconfiguration\nRésumé : \nDeep eutectic solvents (DESs) constitute a highly tunable class of liquid media formed by the association of two or more components (e.g.\, a hydrogen-bond donor and an organic salt)\, whose extensive hydrogen bonding interactions result in a pronounced depression of the melting point. Their composition-dependent physicochemical properties make DESs particularly attractive for directing the self-assembly of functional soft materials [1\,2]. In this context\, eutectogels (gels formed within DES media)\, offer a versatile platform in which solvent–solute interactions can be exploited to modulate macroscopic material properties beyond those dictated by the gelator alone [3]. \nHerein\, we report a versatile strategy for the design of light-responsive eutectogels with intrinsically tunable mechanical properties. The approach relies on the supramolecular co-assembly of an amphiphilic component with a rationally designed azobenzene derivative engineered for high solubility in water-free DES media. Through complementary characterization across molecular and mesoscale length scales\, we provided a detailed understanding of the heterotypic interactions underlying the formation of elongated\, one-dimensional supramolecular networks. We further establish that photoisomerization of the azobenzene units induces pronounced rearrangements of these networks\, providing a molecular-level mechanism for controlling the material’s hierarchical organization. \nUpon ultraviolet irradiation\, this molecular reconfiguration leads to an abrupt gel-to-sol transition\, effectively erasing the material’s solid-like mechanical response. Subsequent exposure to visible light reverses the process\, restoring the gel state and recovering a mechanically robust network that remains stable during prolonged storage without appreciable loss of performance. Remarkably\, the optically driven transition is highly reversible and cyclable\, enabling repeated switching between gel and sol states without detectable deterioration of structural integrity or mechanical properties. Collectively\, these results demonstrate how molecular photochemical events can be translated into reversible macroscopic mechanical actuation\, establishing DES-based supramolecular eutectogels as promising platforms for dynamically reconfigurable soft matter. \nReferences :\n[1] Hansen\, B. et al.\, Chem. DESCRIPTION:Observing protein dynamics in biomolecular condensates and their emergent material properties\nRésumé : \nThe cell nucleus is crowded with highly charged proteins and nucleic acids\, yet it remains dynamic. Biomolecular condensates\, membraneless compartments proposed to help organize such environments\, can be as fluid as water or as thick as honey. What sets these differences at the molecular level is unclear. We studied condensates formed by highly charged\, disordered nuclear proteins\, such as histone H1 and prothymosin-α\, whose viscosities span a hundredfold. Viscosity closely tracks how fast the proteins move and how quickly their chains rearrange\, and simple physical relations predict one from the other. Simulations show that the key factor is how long amino acids stay in contact : arginine prolongs contacts and salt shortens them. Such rapid contact exchange may help keep crowded compartments like the nucleus fluid.\nI will also present the lab’s future direction on protein aggregation dynamics\, particularly on the surface of protein condensates. \n_ \nContact : olivier.destaing@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

DESCRIPTION:Synaptogenesis and Survival : What is the Kinetochore doing in a Postmitotic Neuron ?\nRésumé : \nThe proteins that form the kinetochore have an essential and much-studied role in chromosome segregation during mitosis. They form a bridge between spindle microtubules and centromeric DNA. What then are they doing in cells like neurons that never undergo mitosis and have no need to pull chromosomes around ? In a genetic screen for mutations that affect synapse formation we encountered one kinetochore component\, mis12\, and subsequently found that many and perhaps all the proteins of the kinetochore complex are required for proper synapse formation. In addition\, however\, loss of several kinetochore components\, caused neurons to die – rapidly in vitro and more slowly in vivo. This essential function was not dependent on microtubule interactions and was located in the nucleus rather than in the neurites. It likely reflects a novel requirement of kinetochore proteins for repair of DNA breaks in post-mitotic cells. Because the kinetochore is the nexus of intense regulation during cell division\, we suspect it will also be central to the regulation of synaptogenesis and DNA-damage responses. \n  \nT.

DESCRIPTION:Light\, a random walker ?\nRésumé : \nHow do waves such as light or sound propagate through fog\, paint\, or biological tissue? For decades\, this process has been described in terms of the diffusion of wave intensity. However\, this picture misses an essential ingredient: interference between distinct scattering paths. In this talk\, we will explore two situations in which interference profoundly alters wave transport. In the first part\, we will introduce a new propagation equation that describes how specially shaped waves\, such as open transmission channels created using wavefront-shaping techniques\, evolve inside scattering media. This provides access to the spatial structure of transport beyond the conventional diffusion picture. In the second part\, rather than shaping the wave\, we will shape the medium itself. We will show how strong spatial correlations can create pseudogaps and dramatically suppress wave transport\, leading to an Anderson-type transition with intriguing connection to percolation. This effect will be illustrated for vector light propagating through three-dimensional disordered media. \n_ \nContact : dorian.bouchet@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

SUMMARY:Isabella SCIONTI (PGNM\, INMG\, Lyon\, France)
DESCRIPTION:Lysine methylation signaling in muscle stem cell fate\nRésumé : \nProtein lysine methylation is an important post-translational modification that regulates protein stability\, activity\, and localization. It is controlled by lysine methyltransferases\, which add methyl groups\, and lysine demethylases\, which remove them. Although its role in epigenetic regulation has been extensively studied\, the contribution of lysine methylation to stem cell fate remains largely unexplored. The main objective of my research is to understand how lysine methylation signaling regulates stem cell fate during development\, aging\, and tissue repair in both sexes. My group focuses on muscle stem cells\, which are essential for muscle growth and regeneration. Their function depends on the coordinated regulation of epigenetic mechanisms\, extracellular signals\, and cellular metabolism. By combining these approaches\, we aim to uncover how lysine demethylases coordinate epigenetic regulation\, signaling\, and cellular metabolism to control muscle stem cell function. \nOne of our projects investigates the relationship between the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and the lysine\ndemethylase LSD1. We found that LSD1 stabilizes β-catenin by demethylating it\, thereby maintaining its nuclear levels and transcriptional activity. This mechanism contributes to the regulation of mitotic spindle orientation and reveal a novel link between extracellular signaling\, protein methylation\, and stem cell fate. A second project explores the role of the lysine demethylase PHF2 in lipid droplet metabolism during muscle regeneration. We demonstrated that PHF2 promotes interactions between lipid droplets and mitochondria\, supporting lipid utilization and efficient muscle regeneration. We further identified a molecular mechanism through which PHF2 regulates lipid droplet turnover by controlling gene expression and communication between cellular organelles. \nTogether\, these projects highlight how lysine demethylases integrate epigenetic regulation\, signaling\, and\ncellular metabolism to control stem cell function. \n_ \nContact : christophe.arnoult@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr \n

DESCRIPTION:Physical properties and structure–property relationships in silver nanowire networks for low-emissivity applications\nRésumé : \nThe increasing demand for energy-efficient windows has stimulated the development of transparent low-emissivity (low-E) coatings capable of reducing radiative heat transfer while maintaining high visible transparency. Conventional low-E technologies\, such as metal-based multilayer structures and transparent conductive oxides\, provide high optical and infrared performance but may involve limitations related to flexibility\, processing\, or manufacturing complexity. Silver nanowire (AgNW) networks have emerged as a promising alternative owing to their low infrared emissivity\, high optical transparency\, mechanical flexibility\, and compatibility with scalable deposition processes. \nThis thesis investigates the physical properties of AgNW networks and their potential integration into low-E coatings\, with particular emphasis on structure–property relationships. The influence of key structural parameters\, including nanowire diameter\, length\, density\, and alignment\, is investigated through experimental characterization and physical analysis. In particular\, an optical percolation transition is identified at a network density well above the electrical percolation threshold\, accompanied by a transition in infrared angular emissivity from dielectric-like to metallic-like behavior. Furthermore\, dense AgNW networks are further shown to follow a generalized Hagen–Rubens relationship\, enabling infrared emissivity to be directly related to the electrical properties of the network. The impact of nanowire dimensions and network topology on low-E performance is further investigated to identify the structural parameters governing the trade-off between visible transparency and infrared emissivity. The stability of AgNW networks is also addressed through the deposition of oxide layers by spatial atomic layer deposition (SALD)\, with the aim of improving environmental and thermal stability while assessing their influence on the optical and emissive properties of the resulting coatings. Overall\, this work contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the structure–property relationships in AgNW networks and provides physical insights into their use as transparent low-E coatings for energy-efficient applications. \nShort Bio/CV \nBuyun Zheng is a PhD student at the Laboratoire des Matériaux et du Génie Physique (LMGP).  His research focuses on the physical properties of silver nanowire (AgNW) networks and their integration into low-emissivity (low-E) coatings for energy-efficient windows. SUMMARY:Giovanna MORIGI (Saarland University)
DESCRIPTION:Searching a quantum database using noise\nRésumé : \nEfficient retrieval of information is a core operation in the world wide web\, is essential for the sustainance of living organism\, and is a paradigm for optimization. Quantum physics holds the promise for a quadratic speedup with respect to existing classical search algorithms. Achieving such speedup\, however\, requires an outstanding degree of control of the quantum dynamics of systems of large size. This implies the suppression and corrections of the errors induced by the unavoidable action of the external environment. In this talk\, we will take inspiration from foraging in nature\, which results from the interplay of deterministic dynamics and stochasticity\, and discuss examples of quantum search dynamics emerging from the interplay between quantum coherent processes and the action of an external reservoir. We will discuss how these insights can contribute to our understanding of out-of-equilibrium dynamics in the quantum world and of the mechanisms of their stabilization\, and how they could pave the way for a novel class of robust quantum algorithms. \n_ \nContact : sergey.skipetrov@lpmmc.cnrs.fr

\n_ \nContact : annonces-cafessc@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

SUMMARY:Michael SONNER (UC Berkeley)
DESCRIPTION:Multibath Influence Matrices : Universal Scaling from Real-Time Dynamics\nRésumé : \nWe introduce a framework for describing the real-time dynamics of quantum impurity models out of equilibrium which is based on the influence matrix approach. By replacing the dynamical map of a large fermionic quantum environment with an effective semi-group influence matrix (SGIM) which acts on a reduced auxiliary space\, we overcome the limitations of previous proposals\, achieving high accuracy at long evolution times\, which we demonstrate by computing the spectral function of the single impurity Anderson model. Once the effective compressed baths are obtained\, they can then be used as building blocks\, allowing the study of more complex models such as the two impurity Anderson model. At a coupling strength between the two dots comparable to the Kondo scale this model is known to host a two channel Kondo like non-fermi liquid point. We study this critical point by considering dynamical observables such as the relaxation time after a quench and the work exerted on a ramp through the critical point exhibiting Kibble Zurek like physics. Finally I’ll discuss applications of this method to non-equilibrium dynamical mean field theory. \nContact : loic.herviou@lpmmc.cnrs.fr

SUMMARY:Diego GARCIA OVALLE (Université de Sherbrooke)
DESCRIPTION:Spin and orbital angular momentum in periodic solids : From nonmagnetic to magnetic materials\nLe séminaire théorie est financé par la fédération de recherche Quantalps. \nRésumé : \nOver the past few years\, the study of the electron’s degrees of freedom have received a major interest in condensed matter\, both theoretically and experimentally. In particular\, investigating the spin and the orbital angular momentum is a source of a fascinating landscape of new physics in periodic systems\, where materials that are effectively nonmagnetic and even composed with light elements can be used for the new generation of more efficient electronic devices. \nIn this talk\, I will explain from the theory point of view how these two fundamental properties of the electron have a dramatic impact on the nonequilibrium responses of quantum materials. Firstly\, in the nonmagnetic case\, I will describe how the angular momentum of the electron can be connected to the nonlinear Hall effect in noncentrosymmetric materials. When moving forward to analyze spin and orbital transport exclusively\, I will focus on distinguishing the role of spin-orbit coupling and the Rashba effect on the spin and orbital-to-charge conversion in materials without inversion symmetry\, which are key figures of merit for the optimization of the basic structures in data storage. Secondly\, we will switch the gear to ferromagnetic materials to discuss two distinct effects in low symmetry crystals that emerge from the trigonal warping of the Fermi surface: A special class of spin-orbit torque and the so-called crystalline in-plane Hall effect. Last but not least\, I will present an important prospect of my work that aims to exploit the spin and the orbital angular momentum in antiferromagnets and altermagnets from surface engineering. Here\, I will illustrate the instance of the nonequilibrium spin polarization reported very recently\, and its potential extension to superconductivity. Exploring nonequilibrium responses arising on the spin or the angular momentum serve not only as a probe of the electronic structure of quantum materials\, but also as tools that might shed light on how to control them externally for novel applications in spin-orbitronics. \n_ \nContact : serge.florens@neel.cnrs.fr

DESCRIPTION:Synthetic electro-biotechnology : Bridging electrochemistry with microbiology to push the biotechnology boundaries\nRésumé : \nMathematics defines the boundaries of biology. In developing a biotechnological process\, one of the most fundamental design principles is the conservation of mass and energy. These balances define the stoichiometric limits of carbon and electron partitioning across the product spectrum\, thereby constraining achievable product yields and\, ultimately\, process rates and titers. In this seminar\, I will introduce our approach to tackling these intrinsic constraints through a hybrid bioelectrochemical strategy. Specifically\, we develop a mediator-based extracellular electron transfer pathway that enables selective targeting and modulation of microbial electron flow. The integration of electrochemistry and microbiology offers a promising solution to partially decouple microbial carbon and electron balances\, thereby overcoming the natural upper limits of conventional biotechnology. \n_ \nContact : natale.scaramozzino@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

DESCRIPTION:Dynamics and  scaling of competitive actin architectures\nRésumé : \nCells constantly experience environmental changes requiring a fast adaptation of their different actin structures. However\, the mechanisms governing the size and dynamics of these multiple actin structures remain unknown. Decoupling the various parameters that would provide a complete understanding of these mechanisms is very complicated in a cellular context. This is why we have developed a bottom-up approach to identify the key molecular mechanisms that determine the size and coexistence of multiple competing actin architectures. We used a reconstituted system consisting of purified proteins and substrates to localize actin polymerization in microwells\, enabling us to work with a limited number of components. With this system\, we reconstituted several dynamic actin architectures\, competing for a limited pool of protein\, over a period of multiple hours. This allowed us to gain key insights into physiological functions related to actin turnover. I will show how we used this system to study the limits of scaling in dynamic structures\, as well as the limits of coexistence in actin networks under resource-limited conditions. Finally\, I will show how we can recapitulate these results in a complementary cellular system\, in which we have demonstrated that an increase in spreading area leads to a decrease in overall turnover\, due to a predominance of structures with low turnover. \n_ \nContact : olivier.destaing@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

DESCRIPTION:Quantum simulation with Fluxonium Qutrit Arrays\nRésumé : \nFluxonium superconducting circuits were originally proposed to realize highly coherent qubits. In this talk\, we explain how these circuits can be used to implement and harness qutrits\, by tuning their energy levels and matrix elements via an external flux bias. In particular\, we investigate arrays of fluxonium qutrits\, and their potential for the quantum simulation of exotic quantum matter. We identify different operational regimes\, classified according to the plasmon-like versus fluxon-like nature of the qutrit excitations. Highly tunable on-site interactions are complemented by correlated single-particle hopping\, pair hopping and non-local interactions\, which naturally emerge and have different weights in the different regimes. We investigate the rich ground-state phase diagram of qutrit arrays and propose practical dynamical experiments to probe the different regimes. Future directions towards analogue simulation of exotic quantum matter are presented. \n_ \nContact : equipe-seminaires-nano@listes.grenoble.cnrs.fr

SUMMARY:Annabelle BALLESTA (Institut Curie\, Paris)
DESCRIPTION:Systems pharmacology and machine learning for optimizing treatments of brain tumors\nRésumé : \nGlioblastoma (GBM)\, the most frequent and aggressive brain tumor inadults\, is associated with a dismal prognostic despite intensive treatment involving surgery\, radiotherapy and temozolomide (TMZ)-based chemotherapy. The initial or acquired resistance of GBM to TMZ appeals for precision medicine approaches for the design of novel efficient\ncombination pharmacotherapies. To that end\, a comprehensive approach combining quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) and machine learning was undertaken to design TMZ-based drug combinations circumventing the initial resistance to the alkylating agent. A QSP model representing TMZ cellular pharmacokinetics- pharmacodynamics and dysregulated pathways in GBM based on ordinary differential equations was developed and validated using multi-type time- and dose-resolved datasets. In silico drug screening based on numerical optimization and subsequent experimental validation identified a strategy to re-sensitize TMZ-resistant cells consisting in combining TMZ with inhibitors of the base excision repair and of homologous recombination. Using machine learning\, model parameters driving response to such optimal multi-agent therapy were derived to assist decision making in patients. Thus\, we successfully demonstrated the relevance of combined QSP and machine learning to design efficient drug combinations re-sensitizing glioblastoma cells initially resistant to TMZ. The developed framework may further serve to identify personalized therapies and administration schedules by extending it to account for additional patient-specific altered pathways and whole-body features. \n_ \nContact : antoine.frenoy@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr
