SUMMARY:Isabella SCIONTI (PGNM\, INMG\, Lyon\, France)
DESCRIPTION:Lysine methylation signaling in muscle stem cell fate\nRésumé : \nProtein lysine methylation is an important post-translational modification that regulates protein stability\, activity\, and localization. It is controlled by lysine methyltransferases\, which add methyl groups\, and lysine demethylases\, which remove them. Although its role in epigenetic regulation has been extensively studied\, the contribution of lysine methylation to stem cell fate remains largely unexplored. The main objective of my research is to understand how lysine methylation signaling regulates stem cell fate during development\, aging\, and tissue repair in both sexes. My group focuses on muscle stem cells\, which are essential for muscle growth and regeneration. Their function depends on the coordinated regulation of epigenetic mechanisms\, extracellular signals\, and cellular metabolism. By combining these approaches\, we aim to uncover how lysine demethylases coordinate epigenetic regulation\, signaling\, and cellular metabolism to control muscle stem cell function. \nOne of our projects investigates the relationship between the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and the lysine\ndemethylase LSD1. We found that LSD1 stabilizes β-catenin by demethylating it\, thereby maintaining its nuclear levels and transcriptional activity. This mechanism contributes to the regulation of mitotic spindle orientation and reveal a novel link between extracellular signaling\, protein methylation\, and stem cell fate. A second project explores the role of the lysine demethylase PHF2 in lipid droplet metabolism during muscle regeneration. We demonstrated that PHF2 promotes interactions between lipid droplets and mitochondria\, supporting lipid utilization and efficient muscle regeneration. We further identified a molecular mechanism through which PHF2 regulates lipid droplet turnover by controlling gene expression and communication between cellular organelles. \nTogether\, these projects highlight how lysine demethylases integrate epigenetic regulation\, signaling\, and\ncellular metabolism to control stem cell function. \n_ \nContact : christophe.arnoult@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr \n

SUMMARY:Buyun ZHENG (doctorant)
DESCRIPTION:Physical properties and structure–property relationships in silver nanowire networks for low-emissivity applications\nRésumé : \nThe increasing demand for energy-efficient windows has stimulated the development of transparent low-emissivity (low-E) coatings capable of reducing radiative heat transfer while maintaining high visible transparency. Conventional low-E technologies\, such as metal-based multilayer structures and transparent conductive oxides\, provide high optical and infrared performance but may involve limitations related to flexibility\, processing\, or manufacturing complexity. Silver nanowire (AgNW) networks have emerged as a promising alternative owing to their low infrared emissivity\, high optical transparency\, mechanical flexibility\, and compatibility with scalable deposition processes. \nThis thesis investigates the physical properties of AgNW networks and their potential integration into low-E coatings\, with particular emphasis on structure–property relationships. The influence of key structural parameters\, including nanowire diameter\, length\, density\, and alignment\, is investigated through experimental characterization and physical analysis. In particular\, an optical percolation transition is identified at a network density well above the electrical percolation threshold\, accompanied by a transition in infrared angular emissivity from dielectric-like to metallic-like behavior. Furthermore\, dense AgNW networks are further shown to follow a generalized Hagen–Rubens relationship\, enabling infrared emissivity to be directly related to the electrical properties of the network. The impact of nanowire dimensions and network topology on low-E performance is further investigated to identify the structural parameters governing the trade-off between visible transparency and infrared emissivity. The stability of AgNW networks is also addressed through the deposition of oxide layers by spatial atomic layer deposition (SALD)\, with the aim of improving environmental and thermal stability while assessing their influence on the optical and emissive properties of the resulting coatings. Overall\, this work contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the structure–property relationships in AgNW networks and provides physical insights into their use as transparent low-E coatings for energy-efficient applications. \nShort Bio/CV \nBuyun Zheng is a PhD student at the Laboratoire des Matériaux et du Génie Physique (LMGP).  His research focuses on the physical properties of silver nanowire (AgNW) networks and their integration into low-emissivity (low-E) coatings for energy-efficient windows. His work investigates how network structure influences the electrical\, optical\, and infrared properties of AgNW networks\, with particular interest in percolation phenomena and network topology. \n_ \nContact : deborah.verger@grenoble-inp.fr

SUMMARY:Giovanna MORIGI (Saarland University)
DESCRIPTION:Searching a quantum database using noise\nRésumé : \nEfficient retrieval of information is a core operation in the world wide web\, is essential for the sustainance of living organism\, and is a paradigm for optimization. Quantum physics holds the promise for a quadratic speedup with respect to existing classical search algorithms. Achieving such speedup\, however\, requires an outstanding degree of control of the quantum dynamics of systems of large size. This implies the suppression and corrections of the errors induced by the unavoidable action of the external environment. In this talk\, we will take inspiration from foraging in nature\, which results from the interplay of deterministic dynamics and stochasticity\, and discuss examples of quantum search dynamics emerging from the interplay between quantum coherent processes and the action of an external reservoir. We will discuss how these insights can contribute to our understanding of out-of-equilibrium dynamics in the quantum world and of the mechanisms of their stabilization\, and how they could pave the way for a novel class of robust quantum algorithms. \n_ \nContact : sergey.skipetrov@lpmmc.cnrs.fr

\n_ \nContact : annonces-cafessc@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

SUMMARY:Michael SONNER (UC Berkeley)
DESCRIPTION:Multibath Influence Matrices : Universal Scaling from Real-Time Dynamics\nRésumé : \nWe introduce a framework for describing the real-time dynamics of quantum impurity models out of equilibrium which is based on the influence matrix approach. By replacing the dynamical map of a large fermionic quantum environment with an effective semi-group influence matrix (SGIM) which acts on a reduced auxiliary space\, we overcome the limitations of previous proposals\, achieving high accuracy at long evolution times\, which we demonstrate by computing the spectral function of the single impurity Anderson model. Once the effective compressed baths are obtained\, they can then be used as building blocks\, allowing the study of more complex models such as the two impurity Anderson model. At a coupling strength between the two dots comparable to the Kondo scale this model is known to host a two channel Kondo like non-fermi liquid point. We study this critical point by considering dynamical observables such as the relaxation time after a quench and the work exerted on a ramp through the critical point exhibiting Kibble Zurek like physics. Finally I’ll discuss applications of this method to non-equilibrium dynamical mean field theory. \nContact : loic.herviou@lpmmc.cnrs.fr

SUMMARY:Diego GARCIA OVALLE (Université de Sherbrooke)
DESCRIPTION:Spin and orbital angular momentum in periodic solids : From nonmagnetic to magnetic materials\nLe séminaire théorie est financé par la fédération de recherche Quantalps. \nRésumé : \nOver the past few years\, the study of the electron’s degrees of freedom have received a major interest in condensed matter\, both theoretically and experimentally. In particular\, investigating the spin and the orbital angular momentum is a source of a fascinating landscape of new physics in periodic systems\, where materials that are effectively nonmagnetic and even composed with light elements can be used for the new generation of more efficient electronic devices. \nIn this talk\, I will explain from the theory point of view how these two fundamental properties of the electron have a dramatic impact on the nonequilibrium responses of quantum materials. Firstly\, in the nonmagnetic case\, I will describe how the angular momentum of the electron can be connected to the nonlinear Hall effect in noncentrosymmetric materials. When moving forward to analyze spin and orbital transport exclusively\, I will focus on distinguishing the role of spin-orbit coupling and the Rashba effect on the spin and orbital-to-charge conversion in materials without inversion symmetry\, which are key figures of merit for the optimization of the basic structures in data storage. Secondly\, we will switch the gear to ferromagnetic materials to discuss two distinct effects in low symmetry crystals that emerge from the trigonal warping of the Fermi surface: A special class of spin-orbit torque and the so-called crystalline in-plane Hall effect. Last but not least\, I will present an important prospect of my work that aims to exploit the spin and the orbital angular momentum in antiferromagnets and altermagnets from surface engineering. Here\, I will illustrate the instance of the nonequilibrium spin polarization reported very recently\, and its potential extension to superconductivity. Exploring nonequilibrium responses arising on the spin or the angular momentum serve not only as a probe of the electronic structure of quantum materials\, but also as tools that might shed light on how to control them externally for novel applications in spin-orbitronics. \n_ \nContact : serge.florens@neel.cnrs.fr

DESCRIPTION:The bacterial flagellum : assembly\, function… and beyond\nRésumé : \nThe bacterial flagellum is a complex nanomachine built through tightly coordinated processes at both the genetic and protein levels. Flagellar biogenesis begins in the inner membrane\, where a flagellum-specific chaperone facilitates the assembly of the core export apparatus. Once active\, the flagellar type-III secretion system (fT3SS) secretes structural components at a remarkable speed\, elongating the flagellar filament several micrometers beyond the cell surface. I will discuss the molecular features of the fT3SS\, how these impact important cellular functions such as membrane integrity\, bacterial fitness or acquisition of motility\, and how we can leverage them to engineer biotechnological and biomedical applications. \n_ \nContact : eric.faudry@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr \n

DESCRIPTION:Synthetic electro-biotechnology : Bridging electrochemistry with microbiology to push the biotechnology boundaries\nRésumé : \nMathematics defines the boundaries of biology. In developing a biotechnological process\, one of the most fundamental design principles is the conservation of mass and energy. These balances define the stoichiometric limits of carbon and electron partitioning across the product spectrum\, thereby constraining achievable product yields and\, ultimately\, process rates and titers. In this seminar\, I will introduce our approach to tackling these intrinsic constraints through a hybrid bioelectrochemical strategy. Specifically\, we develop a mediator-based extracellular electron transfer pathway that enables selective targeting and modulation of microbial electron flow. The integration of electrochemistry and microbiology offers a promising solution to partially decouple microbial carbon and electron balances\, thereby overcoming the natural upper limits of conventional biotechnology. \n_ \nContact : natale.scaramozzino@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

DESCRIPTION:Dynamics and  scaling of competitive actin architectures\nRésumé : \nCells constantly experience environmental changes requiring a fast adaptation of their different actin structures. However\, the mechanisms governing the size and dynamics of these multiple actin structures remain unknown. Decoupling the various parameters that would provide a complete understanding of these mechanisms is very complicated in a cellular context. This is why we have developed a bottom-up approach to identify the key molecular mechanisms that determine the size and coexistence of multiple competing actin architectures. We used a reconstituted system consisting of purified proteins and substrates to localize actin polymerization in microwells\, enabling us to work with a limited number of components. With this system\, we reconstituted several dynamic actin architectures\, competing for a limited pool of protein\, over a period of multiple hours. This allowed us to gain key insights into physiological functions related to actin turnover. I will show how we used this system to study the limits of scaling in dynamic structures\, as well as the limits of coexistence in actin networks under resource-limited conditions. Finally\, I will show how we can recapitulate these results in a complementary cellular system\, in which we have demonstrated that an increase in spreading area leads to a decrease in overall turnover\, due to a predominance of structures with low turnover. \n_ \nContact : olivier.destaing@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

DESCRIPTION:Quantum simulation with Fluxonium Qutrit Arrays\nRésumé : \nFluxonium superconducting circuits were originally proposed to realize highly coherent qubits. In this talk\, we explain how these circuits can be used to implement and harness qutrits\, by tuning their energy levels and matrix elements via an external flux bias. In particular\, we investigate arrays of fluxonium qutrits\, and their potential for the quantum simulation of exotic quantum matter. We identify different operational regimes\, classified according to the plasmon-like versus fluxon-like nature of the qutrit excitations. Highly tunable on-site interactions are complemented by correlated single-particle hopping\, pair hopping and non-local interactions\, which naturally emerge and have different weights in the different regimes. We investigate the rich ground-state phase diagram of qutrit arrays and propose practical dynamical experiments to probe the different regimes. Future directions towards analogue simulation of exotic quantum matter are presented. \n_ \nContact : equipe-seminaires-nano@listes.grenoble.cnrs.fr

DESCRIPTION:Systems pharmacology and machine learning for optimizing treatments of brain tumors\nRésumé : \nGlioblastoma (GBM)\, the most frequent and aggressive brain tumor inadults\, is associated with a dismal prognostic despite intensive treatment involving surgery\, radiotherapy and temozolomide (TMZ)-based chemotherapy. The initial or acquired resistance of GBM to TMZ appeals for precision medicine approaches for the design of novel efficient\ncombination pharmacotherapies. To that end\, a comprehensive approach combining quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) and machine learning was undertaken to design TMZ-based drug combinations circumventing the initial resistance to the alkylating agent. A QSP model representing TMZ cellular pharmacokinetics- pharmacodynamics and dysregulated pathways in GBM based on ordinary differential equations was developed and validated using multi-type time- and dose-resolved datasets. In silico drug screening based on numerical optimization and subsequent experimental validation identified a strategy to re-sensitize TMZ-resistant cells consisting in combining TMZ with inhibitors of the base excision repair and of homologous recombination. Using machine learning\, model parameters driving response to such optimal multi-agent therapy were derived to assist decision making in patients. Thus\, we successfully demonstrated the relevance of combined QSP and machine learning to design efficient drug combinations re-sensitizing glioblastoma cells initially resistant to TMZ. The developed framework may further serve to identify personalized therapies and administration schedules by extending it to account for additional patient-specific altered pathways and whole-body features. \n_ \nContact : antoine.frenoy@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

DESCRIPTION:Mechanisms for Chaotic Transitions in Many-Body Systems\nLe séminaire théorie est financé par la fédération de recherche Quantalps. \nRésumé : \nA widely observed phenomenon in interacting systems of many particles is a phase transition from a chaotic to an integrable/non-chaotic phase and vice versa. The mechanism which controls such a transition is strongly model-dependent. It is therefore necessary to develop a model of such chaotic transitions which picks up the model-independent features and explains the nature of the transition. I will present and discuss two potential mechanisms which describe such transitions. The first mechanism\, titled « network classes » addresses integrable-to-chaotic transitions and separates systems into universality classes. Inspired from classical dynamics\, I will extend its’ definition to quantum systems. In the process\, I will also introduce quantum analogues of known classical chaos markers. I will discuss where such a description works and where it fails through a quantum—classical correspondence. Then I will present the next mechanism\, titled « scale separation » which will address chaotic-to-integrable transitions. I will discuss it purely in a quantum setup by constructing a (semi=solvable) model which explicitly realizes this mechanism. I will present the various properties of this model show how such a transition may occur. I will conclude with comments and future directions on developing better descriptions of such transitions. \n_ \nContact : loic.herviou@lpmmc.cnrs.fr \n

\nAbstract : \nFrustrated magnetism is a field of condensed matter physics that studies systems in which the interactions between\nmagnetic moments cannot be satisfied simultaneously\, due to the geometry of the crystal lattice or the very nature of the interactions\, thereby generating a plethora of new exotic states. Among these\, spin ice is a correlated and degenerate state\, lacking long-range order\, which is governed by a local constraint (the ice rule) arising from effective ferromagnetic interactions. In rare-earth oxides with formula R2M2O7 (R = rare earth\, M = metal)\, the rare earth lies on a pyrochlore lattice—the archetype of a three-dimensional frustrated lattice—and the spin ice state is stabilized when R = Ho\, Dy\, and M is nonmagnetic. The objective of this thesis is to understand how this ground state evolves under the influence of perturbations\, using two complementary strategies: (i) The introduction of structural disorder through the partial substitution of Ti atoms with Hf atoms in Ho2Ti2O7. Since Hf atoms are larger\, this substitution introduces a local distortion of the crystal lattice\, which promotes the emergence of quantum fluctuations in the form of transverse fields. These fluctuations can induce a tunneling effect between the various degenerate configurations of the ground state and stabilize a new quantum spin ice phase in which new excitations are expected. Through a detailed study of powder samples with various substitution rates\, we investigate how the spin ice state and its properties evolve with disorder. We demonstrate the development of quantum fluctuations induced by substitution by observing a global acceleration of the dynamics as well as the presence of new low energy excitations. The implications of these observations for the nature of the stabilized phases are discussed. (ii) The introduction of a magnetic metal on the M site\, which generates a magnetic interaction between the rare earth and the metal and deeply alters the ground state. When M = Ir\, previous studies have shown the stabilization of a fragmented state in which the magnetization consists of an ordered antiferromagnetic component and a disordered component governed by local constraints. Here\, we focus on the case of Ru to test the hypothesis of a fragmented state\, this time of the ferromagnetic type\, in the compound Ho2Ru2O7. To this end\, we study the Y2Ru2O7 and Dy2Ru2O7 compounds. In Y2Ru2O7\, the temperature dependence of the magnetic structure of ruthenium and the associated spin waves are measured with the aim of establishing the Hamiltonian for ruthenium interactions. In Dy2Ru2O7\, we show that although the ordered moment differs from that observed in Ho2Ru2O7\, the measured dynamics exhibit similar characteristics. These observations raise questions about the interaction mechanisms between the rare earth element and the metal\, which we address by probing the temperature dependence of the energy structure of the crystal field levels. This research is based primarily on measurements of magnetization and alternative susceptibility at very low temperatures (70 mK) performed using magnetometers developed in the laboratory\, combined with a wide range of neutron scattering measurements (diffraction\, polarized neutrons\, inelastic scattering\, and spin echo). \n_ \nContact : nathan.bujault@neel.cnrs.fr

DESCRIPTION:Reducing CO2 from air by trapping it in a foam concentrator\nRésumé : \nThe increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) requires the development of complementary strategies for its capture and conversion into value-added products. This thesis investigates two complementary approaches within the framework of carbon capture and utilization (CCU): CO2 transport through aqueous foams and electrochemical CO2 reduction to carbon monoxide (CO) using silver nanowire (AgNW) gas diffusion electrodes. A dedicated experimental system was developed to investigate gas transport through foams while simultaneously monitoring their structural evolution. The results demonstrated preferential CO2 transport relative to O2 in foamed systems\, while experiments with binary and ternary gas mixtures highlighted the influence of gas composition and headspace geometry on transport behavior. AgNWs were synthesized using a modified polyol method and optimized through control of halide-based nucleation conditions before being integrated into gas diffusion electrodes. The resulting electrodes exhibited high selectivity toward CO2 reduction to CO\, with faradaic efficiencies up to 90% in both a flow cell and a zero-gap electrolyzer. Operation at 200 mA cm−2 demonstrated the potential of the AgNW architecture for high-rate CO2 electrolysis\, while a CO2 conversion efficiency of 34% was achieved at a reduced CO2 flow rate. Despite stable electrochemical performance over several hours\, post-electrolysis characterization revealed nanoscale restructuring of the AgNWs and partial removal of the PVP capping layer. This thesis provides complementary insights into CO2 transport and electrochemical conversion\, establishing a basis for further development of foam-based gas transport systems\, and for improving the stability of AgNW-based electrodes. \n_ \nContact : irig.communication@cea.fr

DESCRIPTION:Qubit measurements using nonreciprocal amplifiers\nRésumé : \nHigh-fidelity QND qubit measurements are a cornerstone of quantum error correction schemes. In state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processors\, this is achieved by combining dispersive readout with low-noise microwave measurement chains based on parametric amplifiers. However\, to protect the qubits from unwanted backaction\, typical systems require multiple stages of bulky magnetic circulators\, a major roadblock toward scaling this approach to thousands or millions of qubits. Here I will discuss various efforts toward building amplifiers which embed directionality\, and their applications to qubit measurements. In particular\, I will focus on the experimental demonstration of high-fidelity\, multiplexed\, QND qubit measurements with a circulator-free readout chain\, achieving all the requirements for scalability. \n_ \nContact : equipe-seminaires-nano@listes.grenoble.cnrs.fr

\nRetransmission en direct par visio \n_ \n\n\nL’accès au CEA nécessite une autorisation préalable\, merci de contacter avant le 7/11 : adresse e-mail \nPresential access to the conference room at CEA-Grenoble requires an entry authorization\, request it before November 7th to this e-mail address

SUMMARY:Corinne LAGROST (Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes\, UMR 6226\, Rennes)
DESCRIPTION:Grafting a multipodal calix[4]arene molecules at gold nanomaterials: Where capping agents and plasmonic properties can support electrocatalysis\nRésumé : \n\nSeminar on Photoelectrocatalysis and plasmonic enhancement\n\nThe synthesis of nanocatalysts often employs the wet colloidal route\, involving capping agents for controlling size and morphology. The presence of these organic ligands at the interface of nanocatalysts is generally considered to be detrimental in the electrocatalytic process because the adsorption of reactants\, evolution of intermediate species and desorption of products typically proceed through an inner-sphere reaction. Far to have an adverse impact to the catalytic activity\, we will show that the role of capping agents could be reconsidered. Another strong marker of the gold nanomaterials is their plasmonic properties which can be advantageous for electrocatalysis through plasmonic-assisted electrocatalysis (PAEC). We will show some of our first results coupling electrocatalysis at surface-modified gold nanocatalysts and laser irradiation.\n\n_\n\nLes séminaires et soutenances sont ouverts à tous\, notez toutefois que l’accès au CEA Grenoble nécessite un avis de rendez-vous. SUMMARY:Soutenance de Thèse par Mauricio RODRIGUEZ (CEA-Irig/Mem)
\n_ \nContact : irig.communication@cea.fr
