SUMMARY:Florent LECOCQ (NIST (Boulder))
DESCRIPTION:Qubit measurements using nonreciprocal amplifiers\nRésumé : \nHigh-fidelity QND qubit measurements are a cornerstone of quantum error correction schemes. In state-of-the-art superconducting quantum processors\, this is achieved by combining dispersive readout with low-noise microwave measurement chains based on parametric amplifiers. However\, to protect the qubits from unwanted backaction\, typical systems require multiple stages of bulky magnetic circulators\, a major roadblock toward scaling this approach to thousands or millions of qubits. Here I will discuss various efforts toward building amplifiers which embed directionality\, and their applications to qubit measurements. In particular\, I will focus on the experimental demonstration of high-fidelity\, multiplexed\, QND qubit measurements with a circulator-free readout chain\, achieving all the requirements for scalability. \n_ \nContact : equipe-seminaires-nano@listes.grenoble.cnrs.fr

DESCRIPTION:Grafting a multipodal calix[4]arene molecules at gold nanomaterials: Where capping agents and plasmonic properties can support electrocatalysis\nRésumé : \n\nSeminar on Photoelectrocatalysis and plasmonic enhancement\n\nThe synthesis of nanocatalysts often employs the wet colloidal route\, involving capping agents for controlling size and morphology. The presence of these organic ligands at the interface of nanocatalysts is generally considered to be detrimental in the electrocatalytic process because the adsorption of reactants\, evolution of intermediate species and desorption of products typically proceed through an inner-sphere reaction. Far to have an adverse impact to the catalytic activity\, we will show that the role of capping agents could be reconsidered. Another strong marker of the gold nanomaterials is their plasmonic properties which can be advantageous for electrocatalysis through plasmonic-assisted electrocatalysis (PAEC). We will show some of our first results coupling electrocatalysis at surface-modified gold nanocatalysts and laser irradiation.\n\n_\n\nLes séminaires et soutenances sont ouverts à tous\, notez toutefois que l’accès au CEA Grenoble nécessite un avis de rendez-vous. SUMMARY:Emmanuelle QUEMIN (Institut de Biologie Intégrative de la Cellule (I2BC)\, Gif-sur-Yvette)
DESCRIPTION:Investigating poxvirus assembly using cryo electron tomography and correlative workflows\nRésumé : \nPoxviruses are enveloped\, large cytoplasmic dsDNA viruses with epidemic potential. Vaccinia virus (VACV) has been used as a live vaccine to eradicate smallpox and is a well-established poxvirus model system. During poxvirus morphogenesis\, membrane acquisition follows an unconventional mechanism without budding or wrapping. Instead\, cellular membranes are being recruited to the cytoplasmic viral factory where they get ruptured and extensively remodeled to make viral membrane precursors with stabilized open ends. Subsequent binding to the viral scaffold protein induces a specific membrane curvature and the characteristic crescent shape. Membrane crescents further grow into spherical particles enclosing the viral DNA and proteins. Subsequently\, the immature particles formed need to undergo further maturation steps including phosphorylation events and proteolytic cleavages to make infectious mature virions with the characteristics ovoid or brick-like shape that contain the internal core structure with a multi-layer architecture. However\, the molecular mechanisms underlying these assembly steps remain poorly understood for all poxviruses. In my group\, we are employing multi-modal imaging modalities including cryo electron tomography (cryoET) and correlative approaches to gain a better understanding of the stepwise VACV assembly to make large and pleomorphic infectious viral particles. For this\, we are targeting viral factories by correlative imaging and focused ion beam (FIB)- milling to prepare thin lamellae from VACV-infected cells. For data collection\, we combine low magnification with high-resolution tomograms in the View Tomo framework to provide key mesoscale information of the cellular context. Notably\, this gives us access to : (i) the re-organization of VACV-infected cells\, (ii) the viral factories within\, and (iii) individual viral particles at all stages of assembly directly in their native cellular environment. Focusing on morphogenesis of the viral membrane\, sub-tomogram averaging is then applied to investigate the arrangement of the viral scaffold protein on crescents and immature virions in situ with unprecedented details at the molecular and structural level.Altogether\, the imaging workflows implemented in combination with tailored processing pipelines to probe the mechanistic basis of poxvirus assembly provide significant novel insights into viral morphogenesis and are also more broadly applicable. \n_ \nContact : ibs.seminaires@ibs.fr

DESCRIPTION:Tailoring Magnetic Spin Textures in La0.7Sr0.3MnO3-Based Micromagnets\nRésumé : \n\nThe development of next-generation computing devices based on spintronics and magnonics requires an understanding of how magnetic spin textures can be tailored in patterned magnetic materials. Within the wide range of magnetic materials available\, complex oxides such as ferromagnetic (FM) La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) and antiferromagnetic (AF) La1-xSrxFeO3 (LSFO) provide an ideal platform for tailoring magnetic spin textures when lithographically patterned as nano/micromagnets. This unique tunability arises due to the strong interactions among charge\, spin\, lattice\, and orbital degrees of freedom. In this talk I demonstrate how an intricate interplay exists between shape and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies as well as exchange coupling interactions at LSMO/LSFO interfaces. Therefore\, the resulting AF and FM spin textures can be controlled using parameters such as the LSMO and LSFO layer thicknesses\, micromagnet shape\, and temperature [1]-[3]. These spin textures are imaged using x-ray photoemission electron microscopy for a variety of shapes (circles\, squares\, triangles\, and hexagons with their edges oriented along different low-index crystallographic directions) with and without their core regions removed (“donut structures”). LSMO nanomagnets are also patterned into artificial spin-ice (ASI) structures [4]-[5]\, where large arrays of nanomagnets are arranged in geometries where all the magnetic interactions cannot be satisfied simultaneously. While one might expect shape anisotropy to dictate Ising states in the nanomagnets\, the unique combination of magnetic parameters associated with LSMO enables the formation of both Ising and complex spin textures (CSTs) based on the nano-island width and spacing. These CSTs consist of single and double vortices and alter the nature of dipolar coupling among nanomagnets\, giving rise to exotic physics in the ASI lattices. These studies demonstrate that complex oxides provide a unique platform for engineering FM and AF spin textures for next-generation spin-based devices. \n\nY. SUMMARY:Serge RUCOLO (Process Research and Development\, Merck & Co.\, Inc.\, Rahway\, NJ\, USA)
DESCRIPTION:Application of Bioelectrochemistry Towards mRNA Production\nRésumé : \nSince the emergence of mRNA vaccines as the lead prevention treatment against COVID-19\, significant efforts have been made towards strengthening supply chains of the components necessary for their production to improve pandemic preparedness. Nucleoside triphosphates (NTPs)\, the elementary building blocks of mRNA\, are key vaccines raw materials\, but are not considered commodity chemicals and therefore pose a supply risk. Leveraging our existing bioelectrochemical oxidative phosphorylation platform\, we have devised biocatalytic cascades to generate four essential NTPs necessary for mRNA vaccine production. We demonstrated the generation of NTPs from the corresponding cheap and readily available nucleosides in a one-pot process with minimal downstream purification. The NTPs generated from this method were then used to produce mRNA strands with comparable quality to those made with\ncommercially available reagents\, thereby offering an alternative supply for these essential mRNA building blocks. \n_ \nContact : cyrille.costentin@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr

SUMMARY:Carlos FERNANDES TORNERO (Biological Research Center | CSIC\, Madrid)
DESCRIPTION:RNA polymerases : transcription and beyond\nSéminaire conjoint des jeunes chercheurs de l’IBS et du PSB \nRésumé : \nRNA polymerases are large macromolecular assemblies that transcribe the genome in all organisms. Because RNA polymerases work on the chromatin\, their activity is connected to other cellular processes such as DNA repair and DNA integration. Eukaryotic RNA polymerases I and III (Pol I and Pol III) synthesize untranslated RNAs that mediate protein synthesis\, regulate gene activity or catalyze chemical reactions. In the talk\, Carlos Fernández-Tornero will present results on the roles of yeast Pol I and Pol III in transcription\, DNA lesion detection and retrotransposon integration. Pol I transcription is regulated through enzyme hibernation (Torreira et al.\, eLife 2017)\, a mechanism that was later shown to operate in other RNA polymerases. Besides\, detection of DNA lesions by Pol I depends on its intrinsic RNA cleavage activity and differs from other RNA polymerases (Sanz-Murillo et al.\, PNAS 2018 ; Santos-Aledo et al.\, Nat Commun 2025). Finally\, Pol III mediates integration of yeast retrotransposon Ty1 upstream of transfer RNA genes\, a mechanism that ensures insertion at safe genome locations (Nguyen et al.\, Nat Commun 2023 ; Huecas et al.\, unpublished). Altogether\, these results underscore the prominent role of RNA polymerases in chromatin-associated cellular processes. \nContact : ibs.seminaires@ibs.fr \n

SUMMARY:Valeria DEL CAMPO (Physics Department\, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María\, Chile)
DESCRIPTION:Graphene in photovoltaic solar energy : results and challenges\nRésumé : \nGraphene has attracted significant interest in photovoltaic applications due to its unique combination of high electrical conductivity\, optical transparency\, mechanical flexibility\, and chemical stability. Despite these advantages\, several scientific and technological challenges still limit its integration into high-performance solar cells. This seminar presents recent results from our research group on the use of graphene in different photovoltaic technologies\, with particular emphasis on the role of interfaces and surface electronic properties. \nFirst\, the implementation of graphene as a transparent conductive electrode in silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells will be discussed. In this context\, graphene offers a promising alternative to conventional transparent conductive oxides\, while enabling new device architectures. The second part of the talk will focus on the use of graphene as an encapsulation layer to stabilize copper oxide hole-transport layers in perovskite solar cells. While graphene can provide effective protection against degradation processes\, the subsequent deposition of high-quality perovskite films onto graphene-covered surfaces presents significant difficulties due to the surface chemistry and wetting properties of graphene. \nFinally\, the seminar will address the characterization of surface electronic properties through work function measurements and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. By probing the electronic structure and energetics of graphene-based interfaces\, these techniques contribute to a deeper understanding of charge transport mechanisms\, which remain among the main challenges limiting the implementation of graphene in high-efficiency photovoltaic devices. \n  \nShort Bio/CV \nDr. Valeria del Campo is an Associate Professor in the Physics Department at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Chile)\, where she currently serves as Head of the Engineering Physics Program. She coordinates the Solar Sustainable Solutions research line at the Solar Energy Research Center (SERC Chile)\, a multidisciplinary center dedicated to advance in public policies based on scientific findings. \nHer research interests focus on photovoltaic solar energy\, graphene and other advanced materials for solar cells\, and the impact of environmental factors such as dust deposition on photovoltaic performance. Her work combines surface and interface characterization with the development of materials and technologies for high-efficiency and sustainable solar energy conversion. \n_ \nContact : deborah.verger@grenoble-inp.fr \n
